Microwave meals aren’t always the most appealing. It’s hard to find something that doesn’t have too much sodium, but isn’t bland from being frozen for so long. And if that isn’t struggle enough, then having the food look nice and tasty is another challenge, as well. Udi’s takes on this challenge with their Roasted Garlic Mac & Cheese.
While at first glance the quantity seems average, if not on the smaller side, but don’t let your eyes fool you. There’s plenty in this frozen meal that can make you feel satisfied, if not full.
Before the meal even finishes in the microwave, you’ll get the perfect combination of the aromas of cheese and garlic filling your kitchen and wafting over to other areas of your house. If the smell doesn’t get your stomach rumbling for food, then who knows what will. The minute you take this meal out of the microwave, your mouth will water and your patience to take a bite will wear thin.
The first bite presents you with smooth cheesy texture; just all cheese. And as you chew, more textures come out. The pasta for example adds contrast to the gooey goodness of the cheese. However, I was a little surprised to be chewing a tiny bit more than I wanted to through the pasta, but I think that’s just the nature of any frozen pasta meal. That aside, the spinach in this dish also helps to bridge the major contrast between cheese and pasta.
When it comes to flavours, there are no complaints here. Surely this could be attributed to the amount of salt, and while sodium content is still slightly high, this dish fares better than other popular alternatives on the market. Clearly, the featured flavour of this product is the roasted garlic — and rightly so! The savoury flavouring of the garlic paired with the creaminess of the cheese is a match that’s hard to beat.
When I feel lazy, but I want something that tantalizes the taste buds, then this dish is something I would probably grab. With everything in moderation, this meal can fool you eyes, and leave you feeling fuller than expected.
